Filipe Martins is a film director, researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto and professor at the Technical University of Porto, Faculty of Media Arts and Design, where he directs the MA in Cinema and Photography. His filmography includes works in the fiction and documentary genres, selected and awarded at several international film festivals. Co-director and programmer of the Family Film Project – Archive, Memory and Ethnography International Film Festival, which takes place annually in Porto since 2012. PhD in Communication Sciences (UM) and post-doctorate in Philosophy (FLUP). Author and editor of several books on film studies, narrative, and aesthetics.
Filipe Martins is a film director, professor (FMAD-UTP), and researcher (IF-UP). His filmography includes fiction and documentary films, which have been selected for various international film festivals and exhibitions.
He directed short films such as Casa de Vidro, winner of the 2019 Voices Short Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and Best Short Film at the 2019 Mediterranean Film Festival Split (Croatia); Landing (Best Portuguese Film at the 2016 Lisbon International Film Festival, Best World Premiere at the 2016 Avanca Film Festival, and Special Jury Mentions at the 2016 Caminhos do Cinema Português and 2017 Paisagens festivals); Untraceable Patterns (Best Portuguese Director at InShadow 2012); and Dido e Eneias (Competition at Curtas Vila do Conde 2007). He also directed the feature film Marias da Sé (Best Feature Film in the international competition at the 2019 Paisagens Festival and Best Portuguese Film at CinEuphoria 2018).
He holds a degree in Art and Communication, specializing in Audiovisual (ESAP, 2002), a Master’s degree in Contemporary Culture and New Technologies (Universidade Nova de Lisboa, 2005), a PhD in Communication Sciences (University of Minho, 2014), and a Post-Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Porto (2020). He is an integrated researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto, within the Aesthetics, Politics and Knowledge (APK) research group. He regularly participates in scientific publications and conferences, conducting research in the fields of narratology, aesthetics, and film studies. His doctoral thesis was published under the title Sentido Narrativo [Narrative Sense] (Afrontamento, 2016). He edited the books Aesthetic Authenticity in Cinema (2023), Memory and Aesthetic Experience (2020), and Trajetos da Narratividade [Trajectories of Narrativity] (2017), and co-edited Unframing Archives (2018), Deslocações da Intimidade [Displacements of Intimacy] (2015), and Das Imagens Familiares [On Family Images] (2013). His most recent book is titled Repetição e Acaso no Cinema [Repetition and Chance in Cinema] (2026). He also has two published works of fiction.
Co-director and programmer of the Family Film Project – Archive, Memory, Ethnography, an International Film Festival held annually in Porto since 2012. AIM Board Member (2026-2028). He has organized conference cycles such as the Narrative, Media and Cognition colloquium (FLUP) and the Cinema and Audiovisual Forum (ESMAE).
He is a full-time professor at the Faculty of Media Arts and Design of the Technical University of Porto, where he directs the Master’s program in Cinema and Photography since 2018, also teaching in programs such as the PhD in Artistic Creation and the Master’s in Interactive Digital Media. He taught for several years at Balleteatro, the Porto Higher School of Art (ESAP), and the Higher School of Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE) in areas related to screenwriting, directing, acting, and film post-production. He is an associate artist at Balleteatro.
